Magic Mike

I’d seen the previews for Magic Mike, and for some reason Don refused to go! Even after another bloke telling us it was supposed to be quite good.

Mike [Channing Tatum] would like to have his own business making furniture from flotsam that washes up on the shore. He lives on the beach so has a ready supply. However he doesn’t make enough money working as a builder to save up, so works as a stripper to boost his income.

He meets nineteen year old Adam [Alex Pettyfer] at the building site, who manages to get himself fired the same day. So he enlists his help to get some girls to go along to the club where he works. Adam is at first a bit shy, but soon takes to the job when thrown in the deep end.

Adam’s sister Brooke [Cody Horn] is none too impressed with her brother’s new career and gives Mike a hard time. Though she’s hard on him, it’s obvious she actually likes Mike.

The club is owned by Dallas [Matthew McConaughey], who relies on Mike to some extent, but is all out for himself. He dreams of opening up a club in Tampa, and finally the plans are set.

This film was pretty much as suspected. A lot of gratuitousness simulation and semi-nakedness without much story. It was a fine way to spend a dreary couple of hours if you’ve nothing better to do, though a couple of the ladies in the audience seemed a lot more impressed than I. They looked to be in their forties but acted about 12. They surely don’t get out much. Or maybe I’ve been out too much!

Fine one for the ladies if you’re not expecting much.
